Tiger Woods will be playing in Abu Dhabi at the HSBC Championships in the near future and he will find that competitive golf has changed forever. In recent years he has not been playing as he once did in his peak and he experienced his first major victory for nearly 2 years in Los Angeles last year.

Many people thought that this might be a comeback for the once undefeatable player but there are currently three British players who will now be competing for the throne that was once entirely his. Rory McIlroy is one of the greatest players currently in the golf scene and he achieved a record under par score at the US open last year. Woods was said to congratulate him on it but he is now going to be facing him this year.

Another great player currently on the circuit is Luke Donald who has a consistency that is almost merciless and he is the first man in history to hold both orders of merit in Europe and in America. He is currently the world’s number one player by quite some way.

Tiger Woods generally plays a limited schedule and he prefers to appear at the major tournaments. He is hoping to match Jack Nicklaus by winning 18 times. It is expected though that Mr Donald is going to stand in his way as he is a serious adversary in his move forward. Despite being the world number one he has never won a major title and it is expected that over the next year he is going to be incredibly driven to do this.

Lee Westwood is another British player who is currently performing very well but unfortunately, because of the presence of Donald and McIlroy on the circuit, his brilliance has been somewhat overlooked.

In the US open last year Mr McIlroy demonstrated that he had the explosiveness of Tiger Woods and he rarely plays defensively. Many people expect he was playing so aggressively because he was disappointed after throwing away a significant lead that he had in a Masters tournament earlier in the year. His performances last year mean he has been put in the same bracket as Donald for the next major tournament.

Graeme McDowell has recently said, “Rory is certainly the greatest player I have ever watched and it is unfortunate that he did not have a chance to play against Tiger Woods when Woods was at his best. He is a fantastic golf player and I really think that he has the ability to cement himself as the next superstar after Tiger Woods.”

Donald recently made some rather controversial comments at the world championships by saying that McIlroy had a greater natural ability at golf than Tiger Woods. It seems that there is an immense change taking place in golf and that McIlroy and especially Donald belong at the forefront of this change.

However, because of the players lack of winning a major tournament so far many people are hesitant to say that Donald is the greatest player in the world despite him holding the number one spot and having other significant records to his name. McIlroy has also been described by Ernie Els as the one player on the circuit right now who has the ability to change history and become the worlds greatest golfer.

Fisher, an Englishman, is joint leader with Graeme McDowell after carding a seven under par round of 65.

The 26 year old dropped just one shot and hit eight birdies to end the day one stroke ahead of Jyoti Randhawa, Jose Manuel Lara and Ernie Els. 31 year old Woods made a slow start by shooting a bogey on the second before making a birdie on the third, and ended the round four under par on 68.

Fisher said afterwards that the closest he had been to Woods previously was at the World Match Play where he used to work, and he picked up his golf balls, but had never met or spoken to him. He added that this has been back in 1998, just before he turned 18 and he remembered sneaking out to watch his play off with Ian Woosnam. He also said that it felt good to be this close to him now and that Woods was looking pretty impressive.

This is the first tournament in which Fisher has played alongside Woods, and he clearly seems unfazed by his presence here. The man from Ascot admits that he concentrates on his own game rather than taking notice of who is around him. He said that he is just like all the other guys out there, he wanted to do his best and he turned up to win as that was their job and it didn’t matter who the competition was.

Meanwhile, the Northern Irish golfer sharing the top spot with Fisher, Graeme McDowell is also hoping that he continues the fine start and carries it into the other rounds at the luxurious Emirates Golf Club. He has been concentrating on the European tour of late in order to stake his claim for a place in the Ryder Cup team.

McDowell shot 5 birdies and hit an eagle on the par 5 13th to take his place alongside Fisher, and he was delighted with the way he played the first round. He said afterwards that he was extremely pleased that he was continuing with the progress that he felt he had been making over the past few weeks. He added that the course was effectively a round of two nines, as the front nine doesn’t give a golfer many chances to score under par.

He said he would only play if he was in the best health possible. The former number one player in the world and three time Open winner reinjured his left knee and Achilles tendon in mid May at the Players Championship in Florida.

He said that everything was progressing the way it should for his return and refused to say he would not be teeing off at Royal St. George come 14 July, nonetheless he did say he was not yet at full fitness.

He added that he wants to play but is not yet quite ready but both the Achilles and the knee are recovering but he said he has yet to hit a golf ball. He said the Players was a borderline decision to play since he was not quite 100% and unfortunately he got hurt playing. This time he said would be different he is setting no timetable. Woods said he learned his lesson and will only comeback at 100%.

Justin Rose is another player that has had a number of injuries the past couple of years. The Englishman said he was confident he is once again fit enough to defend his AT&T National title. Last year at this time he was enjoying the best stretch of his career with winning the Memorial before the AT&T. He is hoping a return to Pennsylvania will bring back those winning ways he had just 12 long months ago.

Since late 2009 he has been a none factor most tournaments he has played but the long time number one still gets top billing and an inordinate amount of camera time trying to regain his prior form with him still be news no matter how well or bad he plays.

The media is not talking too much about the former subordinates of the golfing middle aged Woods and Phil Mickelson that are taking over on both the PGA and European PGA tours.

The number one ranked player in the world is German Martin Kaymer, a 26 year old that could stay there for a time to come with Englishman and veteran Lee Westwood at No. 2 and playing well for someone that will turn 38 later in the year.

The 33 year old Luke Donald is the no. 3 player in the world with Graeme McDowell from Northern Ireland the 4th ranked with young gun countrymen Rory McIlroy is number 8.

Tiger Woods has dropped all the way to number 5 and Mickelson is down to 6th after being the perennial number 2 behind Woods. Four US golfers are ranked in the top 10 with Matt Kuchar and Steve Stricker rounding out the top ten respectively at 9 and 10.

Westwood, Donald and Paul Casey at number 7 make three English golfers in the top 7 and there are two Northern Ireland players in the top 8 with the European golfers easily dominating the world rankings with the top 4 spots and 11 out of the top 20. The best current US golfer is world ranked number 11 Dustin Johnson who turns 27 in June and another is Bubba Watson, a late bloomer at 32 who is ranked 17th in the world.

Tiger has always been special, dominating the world rankings since he was 21 after cutting short his college career at Stanford to begin winning immediately on the pro tour in tournaments both big and small.

He has won 71 PGA tour events in his 13 year career with 14 of those being major championships with the last in the 2008 U.S Open with an injured knee that would later need surgery, but today is different, he has become like an average weekend golfer with his hits into the water and the flinging of clubs.

The Ryder Cup is one of the last great sporting events to be founded in prestige rather than prize money. Choose from the U.S. or European squad and participate in the various competition formats – foursomes where players hit alternate shots, fourballs and singles which traditionally bring the biennial event to a close with players going head to head.

When playing The Ryder Cup mode offline, gamers will have the option to swap matches, thus giving you the ultimate control over the outcomes of other matches.

With possibly golf’s greatest ever player and the biggest global sports star of his generation out of the game for an ‘indefinite’ period of time there is of course huge interest as to when he will next play competitive golf.

After much interest in when he will return to professional golf, online sports betting company extrabet care taking bets on which Major Tiger Woods will next play.

Current odds for next Major Tournament event in 2010 are:

•	US Masters 1/2
•	US Open 4/1
•	The Open 9/1
•	USPGA 16/1
•	Not to play a Major in 2010 7/2

The big price move has been that Tiger Woods will not to play a Major in 2010 which has gone from 5/1 to 7/2 in 1 week. Elsewhere he was 5/6 to play in the 2010 Masters and is now 1/2.

extrabet’s Chris Shillington explains further. “For what we would deem a ‘fun’ bet there has been huge interest in this market. It just reconfirms Tiger Woods as the biggest star in world sport’

Tiger Woods has been a real golf legend over recent years, set to be the greatest golfer ever.

•	He has won 14 Majors. Jack Nicklaus has won the most golf Majors ever with 18
•	Tiger Woods has won 97 professional tournaments worldwide
•	Tiger Woods held all 4 Majors after winning the Open Championship in 2000
•	He first swung a golf club aged 11 months

To say that golf is a popular sport is an understatement, with golf fans from all over the world obsessively following it and admiring its players, and it is easy to see why. It is a game that produces some incredible athletes and some true champions.

Of course there is Tiger Woods, who has been dubbed one of the greatest golfers in history by more than one golfing commentator and official ranking. Though his form has not been the greatest in 2009, having lost every major tournament. Hot at the moment is South Korea’s YE Yang, who became the first Asian winner of a major when he beat Tiger Woods to take the USPGA this year.

But perhaps one of the most talked about players in golf at the moment is Henrik Stenson, Sweden’s best golfer, who has spent a considerable amount of time in the World Top Ten. Having been introduced to the sport of golf as a teenager by a friend of the family, he was already a scratch handicap at 18 years of age and was representing Sweden as an amateur. Henrik Stenson then turned professional in 1998 and, after a quiet couple of years, managed to finish top of the Challenge Tour rankings in 2000. He then went on to win the Benson and hedges International Open in the following year, and has been selected for the last two Ryder Cup sides.

The Ryder Cup is a golfing meet in which teams of twelve from Europe and the US compete. Some matches in the Ryder Cup consist of players from the same team taking alternate shots throughout the match at the same ball and each hole is won by the team that gets it in with the least amount of shots. Others consist of smaller teams where each player plays their own ball throughout, the winning team being the one with the golfer that has the lowest score. Henrik Stenson made a confident Ryder Cup debut in 2006 where he potted the winning put as he beat Vaughan Taylor in the singles and put forth an impressive performance in the foursomes, ensuring a European victory. From this time he has gone from strength to strength and is considered one of the most consistent performers not only in European, but world golf in recent seasons.

Though Henrik Stenson has not won a US Open, many believe that he has the potential to do so in the future, though he plays golf in the US decidedly less than many of his European counterparts. Traditionally, it has been near impossible for a non-American to win the US Open for various reasons. Though this seems to have changed with the turn of the century, meaning that Henrik Stenson may just have a chance if he continues with his top form. The US Open is the second of the year’s four majors, having just been played in June of this year.

Henrik Stenson made golf history in 2009 when he stripped to his boxer shorts to play a shot out of a muddy bog during the first round of the WGC-CA Championships, proving that he has the personality to make him a truly loveable golf champion.

He is ranked fourth in the world, and it is unsurprising as to why as Henrik Stenson continues to impress with consistently unfaltering form.
